Former Wildcat Great to Have Number Retired

Jan. 21, 2000

During halftime of Villanova's women's basketball game against No. 1 Connecticut on Saturday, Jan. 22, at The Pavilion, former Wildcat standout Nancy Bernhardt will have her No. 31 jersey retired. Villanova's retirement policy calls for the name and jersey to be retired with the number staying in active circulation. Tip-off for the Wildcats and Huskies is scheduled for noon.

Bernhardt played for current Wildcat head coach Harry Perretta and the Wildcats from 1980-84. In 119 career games, Bernhardt scored 2,018 points, establishing her as one of just two players in the history of Villanova women's basketball to score 2,000 career points. She also rates fifth on the school's all-time assist list with 465 and seventh in rebounds with 631.

Still today, Bernhardt holds nine school records including games played in a career with 119 and career free throw percentage of 79.4 percent. A two-time All-Big East selection, Bernhardt was a 1984 Eastman Kodak Region II All-American. In her four-year Wildcat career, Bernhardt was instrumental in leading her team to an 87-32 record. As a sophomore in 1981-82, Bernhardt shot 50 percent from the field and averaged 16.5 points per game and helped the Wildcats advance to the AIAW Final Four.

Bernhardt joins Shelly Pennefather (1983-87) and Lisa Ortlip (1978-82) as the only Wildcat women's basketball players to have their jerseys retired.
