Wildcats Lose Heartbreaker to Providence College 3-2

Villanova, Pa. -- On Sunday, October 22, the Villanova Wildcat volleyball team traveled to Providence, Rhode Island to square off against the Providence College Friars in a Big East conference match. After winning the first two games of the match 15-13 and 15-7 and on the brink of victory, Villanova was dominated. The Wildcats lost the next three games 15-3, 15-4, and 15-9. With the loss Villanova's record falls to 1-5 in the Big East and 8-15 overall. The victory improved the Friars mark to 16-9 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

Leading the way for Villanova were seniors Tina Zitterich (Ames, Iowa/Gilbert) and Breen Eddinger (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep). The duo combined for 28 kills. Zitterich led the Wildcat attack posting 16 kills, while accumulating a .400 hitting percentage. Eddinger added 12 kills while hitting .290 on the afternoon. Assisting Zitterich and Eddinger was freshman Jennifer Edwards (Valencia, Calif./Valencia). Edwards, fighting off illness, tallied 44 assists in the match.

Defensively for Villanova, Zitterich and sophomore Leah Mathews (Poway, Calif./Our Lady of Peace) attempted to stymie the Friar attack. Zitterich posted 10 block assists and 1 solo block. Mathews recorded 13 digs and three block assists. Zitterich, Eddinger and fellow senior Lisa Trumbull (Rockford, Ill./Keith School) each added nine digs. Trumbull also recorded five block assists.

On the afternoon, Villanova pounded out 52 kills, while accumulating a .207 hitting percentage. On the defense of side they posted 55 digs and 14 total team blocks.

Villanova will return to action next this upcoming weekend, October 28 and 29, against Big East opponents West Virginia and Pittsburgh. The time of the West Virginia match on the 28th was changed from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The time was also changed on the Pittsburgh match on the 29th from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
