Villanova, Pa. - On Sunday, October 29, the Villanova Wildcat volleyball team hosted the University of Pittsburgh in a Big East volleyball match. Despite dominating the second game and most of the third, Villanova was defeated 3-1. The 3-15, 15-6, 11-15, 1-15 loss brings Villanova's record to 9-16 overall and 2-6 in the Big East. With the victory, Pittsburgh improves to 20-8 overall and 6-2 in the Big East.
Leading the way for Villanova on offense was senior Breen Eddinger (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep). Eddinger recorded 11 kills in the effort. Fellow senior Tina Zitterich (Ames, Iowa/Gilbert) joined Eddinger in tallying 10 kills. Assisting the senior duo was freshman Jennifer Edwards (Valencia, Calif./Valencia). Edwards handed out 34 helpers on the afternoon.
Defensively for Villanova, Eddinger posted 11 digs. She was accompanied by senior Ruth Ann Blankenheim (Lighthouse Point, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons), who tallied 10 digs on the afternoon. At the net, Edwards led all players in the match with six block assists. Eddinger, the other player in on most of Edwards' blocks, recorded one solo block and five block assists.
While Pittsburgh dominated game one and four, Villanova clearly controlled the others. The Wildcats weren't able to win game three, but some bright spots appeared. In both games two and three Villanova dominated the net. In the entire match, Villanova recorded one block solo and 14 block assists. During game three, Villanova's offense was stymied once they got to seven points. However, junior Dana Jones (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane) stepped to the forefront and crushed four kills. Jones' effort kept the Wildcats in the game and gave them a chance to win.
Villanova will be in action next November 4 at 1:00 PM at home against St. John's. Before the match Villanova players will honor their parents on Parent's Recognition Day.
