VILLANOVA, Pa. - Colin Raws blasted a low shot into the right corner of the net in the first overtime to lift the Villanova Wildcats to a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia University Rams in a game played on Tuesday afternoon at the Villanova Soccer Complex.
The first half began quietly as each team generated only two shots each in the game's first ten minutes. But as the half progressed, it was Villanova which produced the best chances. Freshman Chris Edgar (Mahwah, N.J.) sent six shots towards the nets and the 'Cats produced a season-best 21 in the first category. But Philadelphia goalkeeper Mike Hamilton was equal to the challenge and the game was scoreless at halftime.
Both teams had opportunities to get on the scoreboard in the second half too. Josip Babic of Philadelphia broke in alone on Wildcats goalkeeper Sean Teesdale (Blue Bell, Pa.) but elected to pass the ball in the 83rd minute and the play was broken up. And a Jim Curtin header sailed over the net midway through the half for Villanova.
At the 102:30 mark, however, Raws finally broke through. He took a feed from freshman Tom Higgins (Exton, Pa.), dribbled and then fired a low shot that eluded Hamilton. It was Raws' first goal of the 2000 season.
Hamilton made 16 saves in the Philadelphia net while Teesdale stopped six shots in posting his second shutout of the campaign.
This game was the final one for both teams in 2000. Villanova finished 6-9-2 overall and 3-0-0 in the Philadelphia Soccer Seven, good for second place. Philadelphia completes its season at 7-13-0.
