VILLANOVA, Pa. -Nate Port scored a goal in the first overtime to give the Georgetown Hoyas (5-3-1 overall, 2-2-1 Big East) a 1-0 victory over the Villanova Wildcats (3-6-1 overall, 1-4-1 Big East) in a Big East Conference game played Wednesday afternoon here.
Georgetown had the better scoring chances in the game's first 45 minutes. Greg Freeberg and Andy Sole both were in the box with the ball but were stymied by Wildcat goalkeeper John Williams (seven saves on the day). Georgetown outshot the Wildcats 10-4 in the first half.
Villanova generated a variety of chances of its own in the second half. Freshman forward Dan Massimini alone produced four shots on goal and classmate Chris Edgar had a header that barely went wide of the net in the game's 77th minute. Yet the contest remained knotted after 90 minutes.
Five minutes into the first overtime, Georgetown got the go-ahead goal. Port took a feed from Carl Skanerup at the 95:32 mark and booted the ball past Williams and into the net for a 1-0 Hoya win.
The Wildcats have seven days to regroup. Their next action comes on Oct. 11, when they travel to Monmouth University for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
