Villanova, Pa.-- On September 23rd, the Villanova Wildcat volleyball team competed in the second of the Subway Classic hosted by Bucknell University. After defeating Canisius College (3-0) on Friday night, the Wildcats continued their stellar play, by crushing Marist College (3-1). The two victories set the stage for the final match of the tournament, which pitted the host Bucknell University Bison against Villanova for the championship. Villanova completed the tournament undefeated after downing the Bison 3-1 (15-13, 14-16, 15-4, 15-5).
For Villanova, seniors Ruth Ann Blankenheim (Lighthouse Point, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and Breen Eddinger (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) stole the show both offensively and defensively. The duo tallied 24 kills and 24 digs combined. Blankenheim recorded 13 kills and 11 digs, while Eddinger tallied 11 kills and 13 digs. Assisting their efforts was Jennifer Edwards (Valenica, Calif/Valencia) who handed out 29 helpers.
Overall statistical leaders for Villanova during the tournament were Edwards, 78 assists, Blankenheim, 27 kills, and Leah Mathews (Poway, Calif/Our Lady of Peace), 31 digs.
With the victory, Villanova improves to 6-9 overall. The Wildcats will be riding a season-high three-match winning streak as they enter league play this coming weekend. Villanova's next match will be against Big East pre-season number one Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana on September 29th at 7:00 PM.
