Philadelphia, Pa.--- On Tuesday, Oct. 23, the Villanova Wildcats got back on track winning their sixth match of the season and outlasting the La Salle Explorers in a non-league contest played at the Tom Gola Arena in Philadelphia, Pa. After both teams split the first two games, the Wildcats controlled the rest of the match by easily winning the next two sets and eventually picking up the 3-1 victory. Scores for the match were 30-25, 22-30, 30-22 and 30-20.
Fifteen different Villanova players saw action including two Wildcats who recorded career-high numbers on the evening. Freshman Kerri Sullivan (Downers Grove, Ill./ South) led the Villanova attack hitting 18 of 36 for a combined .361 hitting percentage. The rookie blocker also recorded a game-high three assisted blocks in the win. Junior hitter Yvonne Pierpont (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Petersburg) responded to the call giving the Wildcats a big boost on the defensive end with a career-high 17 digs.
Freshman Jennifer Badran-Grycan (Santa Monica, Calif./Palisades) directed the 'Nova offense tallying 46 assists in addition to five digs and four kills. Seniors Dana Jones (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane) and Jacqueline Fugiel (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) and junior Leah Mathews (Poway, Calif./Our Lady of Peace) all played prominent roles in an impressive offensive attack that out-hit the Explorers 66-47. Jones registered 14 kills and three digs, Fugiel added 12 kills and Mathews chipped in with 11 kills and nine digs.
The Explorers were led in the loss by Lindsey Viehmann who recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs while Kristin Russo added 11 kills and seven digs.
With the victory, Villanova improves to 6-11 on the season as La Salle drops to an overall 8-17.
The Wildcats will return to action on Homecoming Weekend, Oct. 27 and 28, when they play host to Virginia Tech and Georgetown. The Saturday match against the Virginia Tech Hokies is set to begin at 4:00 P.M. at the Jake Nevin Field House.
