Volleyball Defeats West Virginia In Defensive Display

Villanova, Pa. --- On Parents Recognition Day at the Jake Nevin Field House, the Villanova Wildcats notched their second Big East win of the season by defeating the West Virginia Mountaineers in five games (30-16, 30-21, 26-30, 22-30, 15-9). The victory improves the Wildcats overall record to 7-16 and 2-9 in the Big East as the Mountaineers fall to 8-19 on the season and 3-8 in conference play.

Defensively for the 'Cats, Villanova posted 95 defensive digs on the afternoon. Junior Leah Mathews (Poway, Calif./Our Lady of Peace) led the team with a season-high 22 while freshman setter Jennifer Badran-Grycan registered 16 and senior Dana Jones (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane) recorded 13. Libby Sybilrud (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) and Mary Beth Cotter (Reading, Pa./Reading Central Catholic) each added 12 apiece and Jennifer Edwards (Valencia, Pa./Valencia) chipped in with 11.

Mathews also led the Wildcats' offensive attack recording a team-high 17 kills. Joining Mathews on the offensive end was Jones and freshman Kerri Sullivan (Downers Grove, Ill./South) who tallied 16 and 14 kills, respectively. Badran-Grycan quarterbacked the Wildcat offense dishing out a game-high 50 assists. She also contributed four kills and three service aces on the afternoon for the 'Cats.

Pacing West Virginia was sophomore hitter Dimitra Havriluk who posted 19 kills and 15 digs in the loss. Erica Montana tallied nine kills and 15 digs and freshman setter Brandice Studnicka recorded 41 assists for the Mountaineers.

Villanova will be back in action on Sunday, Nov. 11 (Senior Day) when the play host to the Pittsburgh Panthers in the last regular season match of the 2001 season. Villanova's three graduating seniors, Jackie Fugiel, Dana Jones and Libby Sybilrud will be honored in a short ceremony prior to the match. Match time is slated for 1:00 P.M.
