Stats

Philadelphia, Pa.--For the second straight day at the Temple Invitational held at McGonigle Hall in Philadelphia, Pa., the Villanova volleyball team split their two matches on the day defeating the University of Delaware in the 10:00 A.M. opening match, 4-1, and dropping a 3-0 decision to the host Temple Owls.

After dropping the first game of the first match 30-19, the Wildcats would rally to win the next three sets defeating the Blue Hens of Delaware with a final score of 3-1. Scoring for that match included 19-30, 30-25, 30-19 and 30-26. The 'Cats came out strong to begin the second game and never looked back thanks to the powerful hitting of senior outside hitter Dana Jones (Mt. Kisco/ Fox Lane) and junior Leah Mathews (Poway, CA/ Our Lady of Peace).

Statistically for Villanova, Jones led the Wildcats with 13 kills and 12 digs. Mathews added 15 kills and eight digs and sophomore setter Jennifer Edwards (Valencia, CA/ Valencia) tallied 39 assists to go along with eight digs. Senior Jacqueline Fugiel (Roscoe, IL/ Hononegah) continued her steady play chipping in with seven kills, seven digs and three blocks.

Unfortunately for the 'Cats, Villanova could not keep up their winning ways in the second match of the afternoon when they took on a tough host in the Temple Owls. The Wildcats dropped three consecutive sets, 30-27, 30-15 and 30-15. Temple dominated the match offensively from the start out-hitting the Wildcats 53-29. Sophomore Margaret Majewska (Brampton, Ontario/ Mayfield) recorded a game-high 16 kills on the afternoon leading the Owls to the victory.

With the split, Villanova's record now stands at 3-4 on the season. The 'Cats will return to action next weekend when they travel to Washington, D.C. to take part in the two-day George Washington Invitational tournament. Villanova will open up Friday, Sept. 14 when they match up against host George Washington beginning at 7:00 P.M.
