Villanova, Pa. - Villanova women's volleyball welcomed Big East opponent Providence to Jake Nevin Field House on November 9. The Wildcats got off to a quick start and never looked back, handing the Friars a 3-0 loss (30-20, 30-23, 30-15). The win brings Villanova's record to 15-16 overall and 4-6 in the Big East. With the loss Providence continues its losing streak which extends to 15 matches.
As a team the 'Cats hit for a .218 attack percentage which climbed after the first set where Villanova hit a mere .125 percent. The Wildcats were able to hold the Friars to a .061 attack percentage on only 25 kills. Overall the Wildcats put forth a true team effort, with everyone on the team getting their chance to contribute and all playing well in the win. As a team Villanova had 13 total service aces which was their highest total of the season.
Freshman middle blocker Megan Abbott had 10 kills on 22 attempts and added two solo blocks in one of her strongest performances of the season. Senior Erin Birunas also had a solid day by contributing 13 kills with a team high .385 attack percentage as well as her court leadership which cannot be measured in the box score. Sophomore Katie Lanting had two aces and reached double digit kills with 10 on the day.
Next up for Villanova is Boston College who comes to the Jake Nevin Field House on November 10 at 2:00. The Big East match is the last home game of the year for the 'Cats and the last home game ever for the Villanova seniors who will be honored before the game. Next weekend, November 16-17, the Wildcats head across the Delaware River to New Jersey to take on Seton Hall and Rutgers in the final matches of the season.
