HOMESTEAD, FL. - On Friday night, March 8, at Kings Stadium in Homestead, Fla., the Villanova baseball team hammered St. Bonaventure by the score of 9-1. The win was the Wildcats' third straight and sixth in their last seven games. The victory also vaulted Villanova to the .500 mark at 6-6. The Bonnies fell to 0-2 on the year with the loss.

Villanova scored three unearned runs in the first inning, taking advantage of wild St. Bonaventure pitching and several Bonnie miscues. Second baseman Brendan Trainor singled with one out for the Wildcats. After first baseman Rob Cafiero fouled out to the catcher, St. Bonaventure starter Saul Solveson walked left fielder Adrian Schau and hit third baseman Dustin Downs. With the bases loaded and one out, designated hitter Ryan Crammer hit a ground ball to second base which was bobbled for an error by Mike Sedor allowing Trainor to score and give the `Cats a 1-0 lead. Kevin Niemczura came on in relief of Solveson for the Bonnies and walked Crammer to score Schau with Villanova's second run of the game. Before the inning was over, the Wildcats added one more as Downs scored on a wild pitch to give Villanova a 3-0 advantage.

In the top of the fifth inning, Crammer singled up the middle on a 1-2 count to score Schau who led off the inning with a single. Crammer's RBI, his fourth of the 2002 season, increased the Wildcats' lead to 4-0.

Villanova starter Tom Kandybowicz sailed through the first four innings, striking out six batters while shutting out the Bonnies. Kandybowicz ran into some trouble in the bottom of the fifth inning, as St. Bonaventure put two of its first three runners on base to give the Bonnies runners on second and third with one out. The Wildcats' junior right-hander ended any St. Bonaventure rally attempt, striking out Damian Blakely and getting Craig King to pop to short to end the inning.

Villanova opened up a commanding 7-0 lead in the sixth, scoring three runs helped in part by three Bonnie errors. Highlighting the inning for the Wildcats was an RBI double off the bat of Trainor. Downs also added a fielder's choice grounder to second, which was thrown into left field for an error by Mike Sedor.

St. Bonaventure ended Kandybowicz's shutout attempt in the bottom of the sixth inning on a leadoff solo home run by center fielder Dan Dennison.

The Villanova offense capped off its scoring in the ninth inning, as the `Cats scored two more runs on three hits. Third baseman Mike Duncan and right fielder Patrick Krieg each posted RBI singles in the inning for the Wildcats
