Villanova Baseball Falls to Boston College in Game One

PHILADELPHIA, PA. - In game one of a Big East doubleheader on Saturday, April 20, at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, the Villanova baseball team was defeated by conference leader Boston College, 10-1. The Wildcats fell to 22-16 overall and 6-8 in Big East action with the loss, while the Eagles improved to 22-13 overall and 11-4 in conference play.

Boston College jumped on the `Cats early in game one, scoring four times in the first inning off of Villanova starter John Yeager. Eagles' first baseman Vinny Scavone knocked in the game's first run with an RBI single, and catcher Jeff Mackor capped off the inning with a bases clearing double to give BC a 4-0 advantage.

In the third, the Eagles added one more run on a sacrifice fly by left fielder Brian Durkin. Yeager got through the next two innings unscathed to keep the Wildcats within five runs.

Villanova finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning. Centerfielder Chris Graziano doubled to leadoff the inning, and rightfielder Brian Hearne followed with an RBI double down the right-field line to cut the Boston College lead to 5-1.

The Eagles pulled away in the top of the sixth inning, hitting Wildcat reliever James Baxter up for four runs on four hits. BC led the inning off with four straight hits - the big blow coming when rightfielder Brian Macchi tripled home two runs to extend the Eagles lead to 8-1. Scavone added a sacrifice fly later in the inning to give Boston College a 9-1 advantage.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Eagles capped their scoring with a line-drive home run by Durkin down the left-field line to seal a 10-1 victory for BC.

Yeager took the loss for Villanova to fall to 3-2. He allowed five runs on nine hits in five innings, striking out three and walking one. Eagles right-hander Chris Lambert earned the win to remain perfect at 7-0. He gave up just one run on four hits in six innings, striking out eight and walking three.

For the Wildcats at the plate, Graziano went two-for-three to extend his hit streak to 13 games. Hearne also went two-for-three, driving in the team's lone run.

For Boston College, centerfielder Drew Locke and Scavone each had three hits, with Mackor posting a game-high three RBI.
