Men's Lacrosse Struggles Continue

April 22, 2002

PHILADELPHIA, PA. ----- The Villanova men's lacrosse team's struggles continued on Monday, April 22, at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa., as the No. 16 ranked Pennsylvania Quakers handed Villanova an 11-5 loss. The Wildcats, playing on just one days rest, have dropped five of their last six contests and stand at 4-8 on the year.

The Quakers held the Wildcats to a season-low one goal in the first half. Freshman Marc Creegan (West Babylon, N.Y.) tallied the lone Wildcat goal with 4:30 remaining in the opening quarter on a feed from junior Brian Marks (Glenmoore, Pa.). Villanova entered intermission trailing by only three goals, 4-1, despite only scoring one goal.

In the third quarter, Villanova capitalized on a man-up opportunity as Dave Cacciabeve (Boonton Township, N.J.) scored his 12th goal of the season on a pass from Creegan trimming the lead to 5-2. The Quakers, however, scored back-to-back goals to close the quarter to capture a five-goal lead (7-2) entering the final frame.

Once again the Wildcats came within striking distance on goals from Mike Holloway (Malvern, Pa.) and sophomore Matt Lucas (Gainesville, Va.) in the opening two minutes for the fourth quarter. The Quakers quickly silenced any hopes of a Villanova rally with four consecutive goals pushing the lead to 11-4.

Holloway closed the game's scoring at the 1:45 mark of the fourth quarter with his second goal of the evening. He leads the Wildcats with 24 goals.

Villanova's goalie, Sean Philbin (Annapolis, Md.) made 10 saves in 60 minutes of action.

In their final home game of the season for Pennsylvania, senior Peter Scott scored a career-high four goals, three of which came in the first half, as the Quakers improve to 9-4 overall, their best finish since 1989.

Villanova will regroup and prepare for their final home game of the 2002 season scheduled for Saturday, April 27, at Villanova Stadium against the Air Force Academy. Opening face-off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
