Villanova Men's Soccer Takes Season Opener at Monmouth

Aug. 31, 2002

West Long Branch, N.J. - The Villanova University men's soccer team won its season opener on Saturday, August 31, getting a goal from freshman Charlie Rowan in a 1-0 at the Great Lawn in West Long Branch, N.J.

The Wildcats capitalized on a score with :14 seconds remaining in the first half to take a 1-0 lead into intermission. Rowan connected on a cross from Tony Rod, sliding the ball passed Monmouth netminder, freshman Art Satterwhite, for the 1-0 cushion.

Monmouth could not capitalize on its own scoring chances in the second half, the best of which came from Joe Sellitto in the 61st minute. Sellitto took a shot from 20 yards out that was punched aside by Villanova goalkeeper Sean Teesdale. The Hawks knocked on the door again in the 66th minute, as Craig Lindquist shot a direct kick that was smothered by Teesdale.

Villanova out shot Monmouth 17-6 in the match, testing Satterwhite in his first collegiate game. Satterwhite, who made seven saves, made his best save in the 76th minute when Rod blasted a direct kick from 20 yards away. A diving goalie made the save to his right to keep the Hawks within striking distance.

Villanova returns to action on Wednesday, September 4 when it travels to Philadelphia, Pa., to take on the Saint Joseph's Hawks at 7:00 p.m.
