VILLANOVA NEWS & NOTES

TALLEY'S TENURE: Currently in his 19th season on the Main Line, head coach Andy Talley can feel responsible for every facet of the Villanova football program, having started it from scratch in 1985. In his career at Villanova, Talley has recorded a 131-73-1 mark, making him the all-time winningest coach in Villanova history. Talley's 24-year overall coaching record currently stands at 159-91-2. During his career as the Wildcat mentor, Talley has guided Villanova to six NCAA playoff appearances (1989, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1997, 2002), four conference titles and two Lambert Meadowlands Trophies. In 1997, Talley garnered the Eddie Robinson Award and the AFCA/GTE National Coach of the Year Award.

HONORING THE PAST: Continuing a tradition that was started in 1994, Villanova University will honor its glorious past this Saturday by retiring the jerseys of two former greats. This year's induction class includes John Babinecz (1969-71) and Brian Finneran (1994-97). Babinecz was a standout linebacker during his Main Line career. A three-year starter, he was a three-time All-East performer. During his career, Babinecz helped lead the Wildcats to an impressive 21-9-1 mark. A four-year starter, Finneran finished his Main Line career as the most decorated wideout in school history. In 44 career games, he tallied 265 receptions for 3,872 yards and 34 touchdowns. In 1997, he garnered the Walter Payton Award as the top player in Division I-AA football. Finneran is currently in his fifth-year in the NFL as a member of the Atlanta Falcons where he is in his second year as the Falcons starting wide receiver.

PLAYING FOR A WINNER: With the 21-17 win over Rhode Island on Oct. 11, Villanova guaranteed itself of a winning season. This rates as Villanova's seventh winning season in the last eight and it is the 14th time in head coach Andy Talley's 19-year Main Line career that he has guided the 'Cats to a winning campaign.

BACK IN THE DAY: Villanova head coach Andy Talley and Massachusetts head coach Mark Whipple are no strangers to one another. Talley served as Whipple's position coach during his playing days as an Ivy League quarterback at Brown University. Talley also gave Whipple his first college coaching job when he hired him as an assistant at St. Lawrence University in 1980. Talley was the head coach at St. Lawrence from 1981-84.

HOME SWEET HOME: To say that the home team has had the upper hand in the all-time series between Villanova and Massachusetts would be an understatement. In the 20 meetings between the two teams, the home team has won 17 of the 20 games, including the last 15 in a row. The last time the away team won in the series was in 1978 when Villanova earned a 25-21 victory in Amherst, Mass.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION: In the Sports Network poll released on Monday, Oct. 20, Villanova is ranked second with 2,563 points. McNeese State owns the top spot with 2,666 points. This represents Villanova's second highest ranking in the program's history. In 1997, Villanova was ranked No. 1 for the final six weeks of the regular season. With Massachusetts owning a No. 5 ranking, this Saturday's game is the second time this year that two Top 10 teams have met at Villanova Stadium. On Sept. 27, No. 5 Villanova defeated No. 4 Northeastern by a score of 28-7.

THOUGHTS OF 1997: Villanova is 6-0 for the first time since the 1997 season. At New Hampshire on Sept. 13, quarterback Joe Casamento threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Matt Chila with seven seconds left before halftime. Against Northeastern on Sept. 28, junior wide receiver Curtis Waltman caught a 36-yard hail mary touchdown pass with no time on the clock in the first half. The following week versus James Madison, Terry Butler ran in from one-yard out as time expired in the first half. Villanova also scored in the last two minutes of the first half in the season opener versus Hampton when J.J. Outlaw tallied an 18-yard scoring catch with 1:23 left in the second quarter.

From a defensive perspective, Villanova leads the Atlantic 10 in total defense at 285.3 yards per game and have yielded a conference-low 151.8 yards through the air.

POINT PRODUCTION: Entering play this Saturday versus Massachusetts, the Wildcats are averaging 33.2 points per game. This statistic is no surprise when you look at Villanova's track record the last seven years. Dating back to the 1996 season, Villanova has averaged 30 points or more in seven consecutive years.

JOIN THE LIST: Due to his stellar play in the first part of the 2003 season, sophomore quarterback Joe Casamento has been added to the "Payton Watch" list. The "Payton Watch" list will undergo two additional revisions prior to the distribution of ballots on Nov. 24th. The winner of the Walter Payton Award will be announced at the 17th annual I-AA College Football Awards ceremony held on Thursday, Dec. 18 in Chattanooga, Tenn.

CASAMENTO BY THE NUMBERS: Sophomore signal caller Joe Casamento has been nothing short of sensational in the early going of the 2003 campaign. In his first six games as a collegiate starter, Casamento is 143-of-199 (71.9%) for 1,481 yards to go with 12 touchdowns and seven interception. Casamento, who currently owns an efficiency rating of 147.24, has had just one subpar game and that came in his last outing versus Rhode Island when he was 28-of-37 for 201 yards to go with one touchdown and five interceptions. For his efforts this year, he has twice been named Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week, in addition to earning The Sports Network National Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 8. Casamento currently leads the Atlantic 10 in passing yards per game at 246.8.

Gibson's three 100-yard games have come against Hampton (13 carries for 129 yards), New Hampshire (11 carries for 100 yards) and Northeastern (15 carries for 105 yards). For his career, Gibson has four 100-yard rushing performances to his credit. In the first six games of the 2003 season, Gibson has recorded 61 carries for 426 yards (7.0 yards per rush) and four scores.

SPECIAL TEAMS SUCCESS: In the latest Atlantic 10 Conference statistics, Villanova boasts two of the top returners in the league. Champen leads the team in touchdown catches with four.

SACK ATTACK: One big reason why the Villanova defense has been so successful this year is due to the pressure that the Wildcats have put on the opposing quarterback. Junior defensive end Terence Taylor has a team-best 3.5 sacks, followed by sophomore defensive end Darrell Adams with 2.5. senior.

The Wildcats become the first I-AA school to defeat a team from a BCS conference in back-to-back seasons since the Bowl Championship Series was formed in 1998. Villanova has played nine games against I-A competition since it restored football at the I-AA level in 1985, and in those 10 contests the 'Cats are 2-7.
