VILLANOVA, PA.--The Villanova Wildcats rallied from two games down to force a fourth game against Rutgers but ultimately fell short, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at Jake Nevin Field House by scores of 26-30, 29-31, 30-27, 29-31. The Wildcats end their 2004 season with a 9-18 (3-7 Big East) record, while the Scarlet Knights improve to 16-10 (4-6 Big East).
Junior outside hitter Celine Nguyen (Palos Verdes Peninsula, Calif.) came away with another double-double, leading the team in kills (22) and digs (26). Dana Kabashima (Santa Monica, Calif.) also earned a double-double, with 18 kills and 14 digs. Villanova's strong play forced Rutgers to work hard for their win, with each game decided by four points for less. In the first game, Rutgers had 20 kills to Villanova's 13, while each team had 18 kills in the second game. In the third game, Villanova stopped Rutgers from a three-game sweep and held them to 16 kills and 10 errors.
Freshman Kacy Sellers (Battle Creek, Mich.) contributed 13 kills for the match, while Kerri Sullivan (Downers Grove, Ill.) added seven and Katie Lanting added six. Jen Lalli (Media, Pa.) dished out 50 assists for the match.
