Villanova University senior defensive end Jamil Butler has been named to the Sports Network All-American second team. Butler becomes the first Wildcat defensive player to earn All-American distinction since linebacker Tyrone Frazier in 1994.
Butler is coming off a senior season where he tallied 65 total tackles, a team-high 16 tackles for loss, a team-best eight quarterback sacks, three pass break-ups, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. He finished the year ranked third in the Atlantic 10 Conference in both sacks and tackles for loss.
His best effort of the 2004 campaign came at Franklin Field versus the University of Pennsylvania on Sept. 25 when he was credited with four solo tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles, two tackles for loss, two pass break-ups and a fumble recovery. For his efforts in 2004, he was named first team All-Atlantic 10.
A two-year captain, Butler played in 47 career games and recorded 229 tackles, 40 tackles for loss, 24 quarterback sacks, seven fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.
A native of Norristown, Pa., and a graduate of Norristown High School, Butler graduated from Villanova in May, 2003 with a communications degree. He is currently pursuing a business minor.
