Villanova University head football coach Andy Talley today announced the 2004 Wildcat gridiron schedule. The Wildcats will play an 11-game slate, including five home games, eight Atlantic 10 Conference contests and three non conference tilts.
Talley and his team will kickoff the season on Thursday, Sept. 2 at Villanova Stadium against Patriot League member Bucknell. Villanova will play its second Patriot League opponent in as many weeks, when the 'Cats travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to take on Lehigh on Saturday, Sept. 11. This will be the first meeting between the schools since the 1927 season.
Villanova begins the Atlantic 10 Conference portion of its schedule with a Parents' Weekend contest versus James Madison on Sept. 18. The Wildcats will play their final non conference game of the year on Sept. 25 when Villanova travels to Franklin Field to battle Philadelphia rival University of Pennsylvania.
Beginning with a home date versus the University of New Hampshire on Oct. 2, Villanova will play seven consecutive Atlantic 10 conference games to finish the season. Towson University, a newcomer to the conference, will serve as Villanova's homecoming opponent on Oct. 23. The Towson game will also be the final home game on the 2004 Wildcat schedule.
Following the Towson contest, the Wildcats will have three-straight road games to finish the season. After a trip to Rhode Island on Oct. 30, Villanova travels to Williamsburg, Va., for a game with the College of William & Mary on Nov. 6. Villanova will have a bye week on Nov. 13 and will play the season finale on Nov. 20 at arch rival and defending National Champion University of Delaware.
The Wildcats return 16 starters from last year's team that tallied a 7-4 mark and finished the year ranked No. 25 in the country.
