Final Stats

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Junior pitcher Shannon Williams (Macnugie, Pa.) hurled only the second perfect game in Villanova history on Thursday afternoon to lead the Wildcats to an 8-0 victory over Drexel in the opening contest of a doubleheader. In the second game, junior Kristen Haynes (Fairfax, Cal.) kept the Dragons on their heels, holding Drexel to just one hit in a 5-0 Villanova victory halted in the top of the sixth inning due to rain.

Williams was dominant in the opener. She recorded nine strikeouts among the 18 batters she faced (the game ended in the bottom of the sixth inning when the Wildcats plated their 8th run of the contest.) Williams joins Theresa Hornick, who notched a perfect contest in 2001, as the only Villanova pitcher to hurl a perfect game.

Lindsey Martin made a superb running catch near the left field line in the sixth inning to preserve the perfect game.

The offensive star of the first game was junior first baseman Kari Koller (Rocklin, Cal.). Koller got the 'Cats on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning with a home run to center field and also drove in two other runs. Allison Wisniewski (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Kristen Yauch (Tucons, Az.) also contributed two hits apiece.

Haynes kept the Dragons largely under wraps in the second game too. The only hit of the afternoon came in the fifth inning, a clean single to left by Krista Van Wert. By that point Villanova had already constructed a 2-0 lead thanks to the efforts of senior centerfielder Robin Flier (Lafayette, Cal.). Flier had three hits, scored two runs and drove in another as the Wildcats built a 5-0 advantage before the umpires halted play with one out in the top of the sixth inning.

With the sweep Villanova improves to 17-12. The Wildcats have won seven in a row and nine of their last ten. Drexel drops to 9-17-2 on the campaign.

Next up for Villanova is a Big East doubleheader at Rutgers this Saturday at noon.
