VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova Swimming and Diving women's squad narrowly beat Connecticut Saturday at the Villanova Swim Center. The men put up a strong fight but fell to a strong Husky team. The women won by just two points 122.5 to 120.5 while the men lost 46-195.
Freshman Kaitlynn Osborn had a big day placing second in three races, the 1000 free (10:21.59), 200 free (1:54.69), and 500 free (5:04.47). Jesse Radtke also had an impressive meet swimming to season bests in all of her races. She took first in the 50 free (24.31) and the 100 free (52.85) as well as swimming a 52.45 on her leg of the 400 free relay. Jenny Somerville moved closer to a repeat Big East Championship swimming to victory in the 1000 free (10:16.51) and the 500 free (5:02.95).
The culmination of the day came down to the 400 free relays (3:35.72, 3:35.93). `Nova had to finish first and second in order to win the meet. Head Coach Rick Simpson and his assistants put together two relays that were nearly equally strong to achieve the necessary result. The first place squad was made up of Marlee Morden, Katie Waldron, Brie Von Rosendahl, Kristina Lennox, while the second place team was Jesse Radtke, Laura Skoda, Kiersten Rosenberg, Trista Felty. The crowd was on its feet as both relay teams came to the wall touching one right after the other, getting the win.
For the men, Mike Kernicky showed promise in the anchor leg of the 400 medley relay (3:40.74), and Matt McLaughlin looked good in the 50 free (22.32) and 100 free (48.41). Ryan McCormick, who achieved a personal best in the 50 free and dropped 3 seconds off of his 200 back from his swim at Tuesday's meet.
The Wildcats split up for the weekend with the women traveling to Houston for the Rice Invitational and the men going to the Bucknell Sprint Invite.
