Final Stats

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Five different Wildcats scored goals and Villanova (0-7, 0-3) never trailed by more than two scores, but American (4-4, 3-0) managed to escape a 7-5 game that saw two ties and two lead changes on Saturday afternoon at Reeves Field.

Villanova jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first half. Freshman Kathleen Kelly (Manhasset, N.Y.) scored less than three minutes into the game and senior Bess Hanley (Baltimore, Md.) added a score of her own just over five minutes later to put the Wildcats up by two.

The Eagles answered back, however, scoring three goals in a row in a span of about nine minutes to give American a 3-2 halftime lead. Moriah Linnell scored first for American off a free position shot with 17:49 remaining in the half. Chelsea Kapp and Sarah Milewski each added unassisted goals to put American up by just one going into the half.

Less than two minutes into the second half, the Eagles' Rebecca Copeland scored to put American up 4-2, a goal that was assisted by Kapp. Sophomore Becky Gardner (Centerport, N.Y.) then answered back for the Wildcats just over two minutes later to put the game back within one goal.

Linnell scored her second goal of the afternoon about a minute later to increase American's lead to two once again, making the score 5-3.

Villanova then scored two in a row to tie the game at 5-5. Senior Amy Rocap (Vienna, Va.) scored less than 20 seconds after Linnell's goal, off a feed from junior Cindy Koza (Thornton, Pa.). Freshman Alex Garvey (Summit, N.J.) then scored the game-tying goal with 15:30 remaining in the contest.

Linell scored the game-winner for American with 6:57 remaining, and then scored an insurance goal with just three seconds left to give the Eagles their 7-5 win.

Sophomore goalie Jess Brozena (West Long Branch, N.J.) came up with 10 saves for the game and held American to 1-of-6 on free position shots. The Wildcats were 1-of-3 in that category.

Villanova returns to action on Wednesday, March 30, when it hosts Le Moyne at 3:30 p.m.
