Final Stats

VILLANOVA, Pa. - In a marathon affair on Saturday night at Villanova Stadium, Jonathan Engelke scored the game-winning goal with 0:47 remaining in the fourth sudden death overtime, lifting Towson (7-3, 2-1 CAA) to a 10-9 victory over host Villanova (6-4, 2-1) in a crucial conference matchup.

Towson's Bobby Griebe sent the game into extra sessions on a goal with just 0:32 remaining in regulation, and then assisted on Engelke's game-winner. The teams battled through three straight scoreless overtime period, and nearly a fourth before the epic game finally ended.

The game featured five ties and four lead changes, and both teams had key rallies to extend the evening. Towson scored the first three goals of the second half to take a 7-4 lead, but the Wildcats came back with three consecutive goals of their own to tie things up. After the Tigers regained the lead at 8-7 early in the fourth quarter, Villanova tied the game with 9:11 to play and scored a go-ahead goal with 3:35 remaining. However, the Wildcats lost possession of the ball in the final minute, making possible Griebe's game-tying score.

Villanova once again displayed its balanced offensive attack, as seven different players scored goals. The Wildcats were led by senior Chris Kramer and freshman Chris MacDonald, who scored two goals apiece. Junior Matt Starker had a goal and two assists, while Kramer and MacDonald assisted on one goal apiece.

Bobby Griebe scored a game-high five goals to lead the Tigers, while Steve Mull dished out a game-high five assists. Todd MacMullan scored two goals for Towson, while Oliver Bacon, Matthew Engelke and Matt Antol scored one goal each.

The goalies for both sides had outstanding games while playing all 75:13 of the game in net. Villanova's Joe Canuso had 13 saves, while Towson's Reed Sothoron had 15 stops.

The Tigers stretched their all-time winning streak over the Wildcats to 13 games. Villanova came as close as they ever had to ending the streak against Towson, but instead were dealt the narrowest of setbacks.

Villanova is back in action at home next Saturday when it hosts Delaware at 7 p.m.
