New York, N.Y. - Sophomore Frances Koons (Allentown, Pa.) set an Armory record and a personal best as the Villanova women opened the 2006 indoor track and field season by taking home the NYC Gotham Cup title at the New Balance Track & Field Center in Harlem, N.Y.
Koons set an Armory record and a personal best with her time of 2:47.08 in the 1000m this afternoon.
"I did what I thought I could do," said Koons. "It was a good race. I felt good coming back to school after the break, and I'm excited for a great season."
Three other women won their events for the Wildcats. Junior Monique Morgan (Kingston, Jamaica) placed first in the 60m high hurdles with a time of 8.49. Senior Marina Muncan (Pancevo, Serbia) won the mile run in 4:42.18. Her time was an NCAA provisional qualifying time and currently stands as the fastest collegiate time in the nation. Junior Akilah Vargas (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took first place in the 800m, crossing the line in 2:12.95.
Freshman Thelma Akpan (Flanders, N.J.) placed second in the high jump, with a height of 5'6", while junior Tiera Fletcher (Bronx, N.Y.) came in third in the 400m dash in 57.06.
Sophomore Arusha McKenzie (Kingston, Jamaica) earned third place in the 500m dash with a time of 1:15.41.
Princeton placed a close second behind Villanova with 25 points followed by Quinnipiac with 23, Lafayette (21), St. John's (16), Albany (13), Lehigh (11), Essex County (10), Columbia (10), Lehman (8), Mizuno (6), Delaware (5), Temple (5), Sacred Heart (4), Fairleigh Dickinson (4), Fordham (3), St. Francis (NY) (2), Morgan State (2), and Delaware State (1).
