Final Stats
VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova women's lacrosse (3-6, 0-3 Patriot League) played in the rain Saturday afternoon as American University (4-5, 3-0 Patriot League) poured on the goals. The Wildcats were unable to sustain an early lead and fell to 0-3 in conference play.
Alex Garvey scored an unassisted goal ten minutes in to give the Wildcats a lead and Shannon Sullivan took a pass from Cindy Koza to make it 2-0 halfway through the first period. From that point on, however, the Eagles dominated scoring four goals before half and adding two more after the break before Villanova could come up for air.
Junior captain Becky Gardner finally found the back of the net at 26:17 to make the score 6-3. But again the Eagles went on a tear scoring three more goals including two from Lauren Lane. At 10:58, freshman Taryn McKenna put one away to make it 9-4. However, American had more tricks up their sleeves scoring two more goals in the closing minutes making the final 11-4.
Jessica Brozena played all sixty minutes for the `Cats with nine saves but fell to 2-5 on the season. Kathleen Finnegan had the win and 14 saves. American had three more shots, 25-22, but Villanova was able to come up with 20 ground balls to their 12.
Next for the Wildcats is a make-up game against Le Moyne at Villanova Stadium on Tuesday, March 28. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
