VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova University swimming and diving programs were in action this weekend as they hosted the University of Connecticut and the University of Richmond. The women took on Richmond and UConn while the men competed against just UConn. The Wildcat women won both meets awhile the men dropped their second of the year.
The VU women defeated UConn 169-136 and Richmond 169-119. UConn took the men's meet 196-94.
Some highlights for the Wildcats were the 400 medley relay team composed of sophomore Katie O'Gorman, junior Brienne von Rosendahl, freshman Liz Stetson and senior Jesse Radtke. Freshman Astrid Armgarth continued to impress winning the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:14.66.
Sophomore Sarah Czar was a three-time winner taking the 100 and 200 freestyle as well as being a part of the winning 400 freestyle relay team. Von Rosendahl added a individual win in the 100 breaststroke.
"I'm thrilled with Sarah's swim, but not surprised, said head coach Rick Simpson when asked about Czar's 200 freestyle win. "She has been in a zone for the last 4 weeks. She truly now believes that she is an NCAA Championship caliber swimmer."
"The VU/ UConn meet has a long tradition of being a true inter-conference rivalry, said Simpson. "I was very impressed with how our women came together and stepped up for the win. I attribute this win to the great leadership that our captains have provided. They certainly have created an atmosphere where everyone has a strong desire to win."
The men had some impressive swims as well as senior Joey Mechak improved his times in the 200 freestyle, 200 IM, 500 freestyle and the 200 butterfly. Mechak's 200 butterfly swim earned him a BIG EAST qualifying time.
Bill Sepich, Justin Stephens and Sean Whipkey continued to cut seconds off their swims.
"It was great to see many of our men have breakthrough swims, said Simpson. Senior captain Joe Mechak had great performances in the 200 fly and 500 free. He's well beyond where he was this time last year. I am very satisfied where many of our men are as we look ahead towards the Maryland Terrapin Invitational. This is a big meet for our men as we look to qualify everyone for the Big East Championships."
