CHESTER, Pa. - The Villanova University men's swimming team (2-3) took to the pool this past Friday at Widener University (5-1) and handed the Pride their first loss of the season, 125-80. The Wildcats were led by sophomore AJ Mak who finished first in all three events he entered.
Widener opened things up with a win in the 400 medley relay but Villanova rebounded with a huge one, two, three finish in the 1000 freestyle. Mak took the victory while senior Kiel Costella and freshman Tom Maughan finished second and third, respectively.
In the very next event, the 200 freestyle, the Wildcats finished first and second with sophomore Sean Whipkey getting the edge followed by senior Joey Mechak. Senior Zach Rambo would keep the winning streak alive taking the 50 freestyle with a 22.40.
Widener would rebound taking first and second in the 200 IM but once again the Wildcats responded with another one, two, three finish in the 200 butterfly. Mechak led the way followed by Costella and sophomore Jonathan Spindler.
Junior John Schaefer won the next event, the 100 freestyle, followed by Whipkey. In the 200 backstroke, freshman Christopher Jordan took home the win followed by three Widener swimmers.
For the third time in the meet the Villanova swimmers would take the top three spots in an event. Mak, Costella and Mechak took over the 500 freestyle beating their competition by 15 seconds.
The 200 yard breaststroke ended the Villanova win streak but a strong performance from freshman Justin Stephens earned him a second place finish. In the final event of the day the team of Whipkey, Mak, Rambo and Schaefer took home the victory in the 400 freestyle relay.
