Box Score

Villanova, Pa. - A hard-fought battle ended with the Wildcats dropping a 10-6 decision to the Quakers on a chilly Friday afternoon at Villanova Stadium. Villanova falls to 1-1 on the season, while Penn moves to 1-0. Senior Mike Haas led the Wildcats by netting 2 goals with the help of junior Timmy Campbell and senior Andy German.

Villanova's Timmy Campbell opened the scoring just five minutes into the first quarter when he sailed the ball past Penn's senior goalkeeper, Gregory Klossner. Penn was able to retaliate, as well as take the lead, with unassisted goals by sophomores J.J. Lian and Craig Andrzejewski. However, Villanova's Tim Atkins was able to convert a pass from junior Chris MacDonald to even the score back at two goals.

The second quarter seemed to mirror much of the first. The Wildcats and Quakers played evenly throughout with both teams tallying one goal a piece to level the score at 3-3. Villanova's Mike Haas struck first off a pass from Timmy Campbell. Less than two minutes later, Penn's Garvey Heiderman teamed up with classmate Craig Andrzejewski to level the score again heading into halftime.

Although it was not prevalent at the time, Heiderman's second quarter goal would be what opened a barrage of scoring for the Quakers. Penn came out from halftime scoring five unanswered goals, all of which were credited to five different players, to put the Quakers up 8-3. Villanova struggled to get back on the board until senior Eric Heidenberger put one in past Klossner with 10 minutes left in the game.

Villanova cut Penn's lead down to two goals at 8-6 with the efforts of Haas and freshman Mark Scioscia. Haas scored just 17 seconds after Heidenberger, while Scioscia netted his own goal about two minutes later. However, that would prove to be the last time the Wildcats celebrated. The Quakers closed out the scoring and placed the game out of reach for the Wildcats with unassisted goals by Drew Collins and J.J. Lian making the final score 10-6.

Although Villanova was outscored, the team did win decisions in groundballs and face-offs. The Wildcats scooped up 27 groundballs to the Quaker's 23 and held a commanding advantage in face-offs 15-5.

The Wildcats will now head out on the road to take on the University of Denver and the U.S. Air Force Academy. Both games will be played in Denver, Colo. on March 3 and March 4, respectively.
