South Orange, N.J. - The doubles positions in yesterday's match proved to be the deciding factor in Villanova's 4-3 loss to Seton Hall. The Wildcats slide to 2-8 for the season, while the Pirates climb to 9-5.
Although Villanova and Seton Hall split the six singles spots equally with three wins each, it was the lone point in the doubles spots that propelled the Pirates over the Wildcats. Seton Hall managed to sweep all three spots to take an early 1-0 lead. However, the Wildcats clawed back at the start of the singles matches with Candice Carlin and Jaclyn Williamson winning the first and second singles spots. Freshman Carla Erskine also captured a point in the fourth singles spot for Villanova.
The Wildcats held the lead, but eventually fell just short in the fifth and sixth spots to drop a 4-3 decision to the Pirates. Seton Hall's Danielle Viola defeated Villanova's Colleen Walter in a second set tie-breaker to clinch the victory in the fifth spot, while Iva Gyurgina slid past Courtney Reed by scores of 7-5, 7-5.
The Wildcats look to bounce back this afternoon as they host Big East opponent Georgetown at 2:00 p.m. at the Villanova Tennis Courts.
