NEWARK, Del. - The Villanova volleyball team dropped a match at Delaware on Wednesday night. The Wildcats (11-10, 2-3 BIG EAST) fell in their second consecutive 3-0 match with set scores of 25-23, 26-24, and 25-21.
Senior Dana Tartazky and freshman Morgan Petkovich led Villanova's offense with 13 kills apiece. Freshman Courtney Oertli gave out 26 assists, while senior Emily Brown collected 12 digs. Freshman Kim Maroon added 10 digs.
After trailing 17-14 and using a timeout, the Wildcats went on a 6-3 run in the first set to tie the score at 20 points each following a miscue from Delaware. Villanova used its second timeout after two consecutive points from Delaware. A kill from Petkovich had the score at 24-23 with Delaware leading, but the Wildcats could not extend the set and fell, 25-23.
After each team traded service errors, Villanova took a 15-14 lead in the second frame. The score was tied at 20 each following a kill from the Blue Hens and Villanova used a timeout with the scored tied 21-21. Junior Amy Gulyas connected on a kill to tie the score at 24, but after a quick timeout, Delaware closed the victory in the second set.
A kill from Tartazky gave the Wildcats a 12-11 lead in the third stanza, but a miscue would tie the game at 12 each. After a 15-15 tie, Delaware ran off three unanswered points and forced the Wildcats into a timeout. Senior Whitney Harrington slammed a kill as Villanova trailed, 21-19, and a kill from freshman Laurie McNamara forced the Blue Hens into a timeout holding on to a 23-21 advantage. Villanova was unable to score again as Delaware claimed the match in three sets.
The Wildcats return to conference action on Saturday, Oct. 18 when they travel to Seton Hall. The match will begin at 5:00 p.m.
