Villanova Falls, 3-0, at Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Villanova volleyball team fell on the road at Georgetown on Friday night, dropping a 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-21) match to the Hoyas at McDonough Arena.

Freshman Maggie Mergen led the Wildcats with six kills, while senior Dana Tartazky connected on five. Junior Chelsea Graman gave out 16 assists with senior Kaela Frizzell collecting 10 digs in the match.

Villanova took an early 5-2 lead in the first set, but the Hoyas were able to tie the score at six. Tartazky connected on a kill to give the Wildcats an 8-7 lead, but Georgetown responded to score four unanswered points as the `Cats used a timeout. Villanova scored just one point after the break as Tartazky connected on another kill and used its final timeout to regroup, trailing 16-9. The Wildcats would score just four more points in the frame as Georgetown claimed the first set, 25-13.

A miscue from the Hoyas and a kill from Mergen gave the Wildcats a 7-5 advantage in the second set, but Georgetown scored five unanswered points to re-claim the lead at 10-5. Villanova used its first timeout after back-to-back kills from the Hoyas, trailing 13-9. A 7-2 run from Georgetown forced VU to use its final timeout, still behind, 20-11. An ace from freshman Morgan Petkovich and a kill from Mergen put the Wildcats at 22-16, but the Hoyas closed out the second frame with a 25-19 win.

Georgetown took an early 8-5 lead in the third set, but Villanova responded and tied the set at 10 apiece as the Hoyas used a timeout. The Wildcats took just one point out of the break on a kill from Petkovich as the Hoyas led, 15-11, and VU called timeout. The Wildcats used their final timeout as Georgetown remained in front, 18-12. Three unanswered points by the Wildcats had the score at 20-18 followed by a 22-20 mark after junior Amy Gulyas connected on a kill. Georgetown called its final timeout after a miscue put the Wildcats to within a point, but Villanova would not threaten again as the Hoyas took the match in three sets.

The Wildcats will close out the 2008 campaign on Sunday, Nov. 16 as they travel to USF for a 2:00 p.m. match.
