VILLANOVA, Pa. - Defensive coordinator Mark Reardon of Villanova has been named a finalist for the Football Championship Subdivision Coordinator of the Year, it was announced this week by FootballScoop.com, the award's sponsor. Reardon is in his eighth season at Villanova and his fourth as defensive coordinator.
The Wildcats just finished their best regular season since 2002 and are expected to make the seventh playoff appearance in program history when bids to the Division I Football Championship are announced on Sunday night. A stifling defensive presence has been one of the key factors that have led Villanova to a 9-2 overall record this season, including a 7-1 mark in regular season conference play.
Through the end of the regular season, the Wildcats led the Colonial Athletic Association with 28 sacks and had the best rushing defense in the league. Villanova is holding opponents to just 79.8 rushing yards per game and is also second in the league in defense with 19.9 points allowed per contest.
Muscle Milk and FootballScoop.com have announced a partnership to create "Coaches of the Year" awards for 14 different position coaches in college football. The other coordinators named finalists for FCS Coordinator of the Year are Billy D'Ottavio (Samford), Jeff Durden (James Madison), Heishma Northern (Prairie View) and Zbig Kepa (William & Mary). Reardon joins D'Ottavio and Northern as defensive coordinators on the ballot, while Durden and Kepa are both offensive coordinators at their respective schools.
