McKenna and Stone Lead 'Cats Past Central Connecticut 9-7

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- Freshman Carly Miller got Villanova off on the right foot with a goal 50 seconds into the contest and Villanova (2-2) went on to defeat Central Connecticut (0-2) 9-7 in CCCSU's home opener played here on a blustery afternoon.

Juniors Taryn McKenna and Katie Stone each netted two goals and an assist to lead the Villanova offense.

Miller opened the game's scoring 50 seconds into play. Michele Conway evened the game off an assist from freshman Cara Momnie, but the Wildcats scored three straight to take the lead for good. After trading goals, Villanova closed the period with three unanswered, including a Katie Stone goal as time expired.

After trailing 8-3 at the end of 30 minutes, Central Connecticut opened the second half with three unanswered goals over the first 4:26. Freshman Chelsea Kuznik found John with just 2:02 run off the clock. Sophomore Courtney Mooney converted a free position attempt just over one minute later, and Conway brought the Blue Devils to within two scores off a feed from sophomore Eve Belardinelli.

McKenna ended the CCSU run with a goal at the 22:08 mark. Conway's final goal, which also ended the scoring, came with 20:35 remaining in the contest. Sophomore Lyndsey Mastandrea assisted on the play. Belardinelli attempted the only shot over the final 20-plus minutes. Her attempt with 3:13 remaining went wide.

Junior Alice Lee stopped 11 shots for the Blue Devils. Villanova freshman Maggie Langan made five saves in the win.

Villanova finished the game with a 22-14 shot advantage and 11-6 margin on draw controls. The Blue Devils, meanwhile, made 2-of-4 free position shots. The Wildcats missed their only attempt.
