VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova volleyball team (14-6, 3-3 Big East) notched its second consecutive sweep on Sunday afternoon in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-21) victory over Rutgers at Jake Nevin Fieldhouse.
Senior Elysse Studzinski and sophomore Maggie Mergen each tallied 10 kills, while sophomore Kim Maroon collected 22 digs and had a match-high five service aces. Senior Amy Gulyas posted 11 digs.
Sophomore Courtney Oertli and senior Chelsea Graman dished out 20 and 16 assists, respectively.
"It feels good to get two BIG EAST wins this weekend and it is good to get back on track," head coach Josh Steinbach said. "We have good momentum going into next weekend. Kim Maroon is playing at such a high level that it makes things easier on the rest of the team. She is serving, passing and defending as well as anyone."
Villanova took a 13-7 lead into the first timeout that Rutgers called in set one and extended the lead to 22-16 after an ace from sophomore Kara Chatham. Studzinski connected for a kill to give the Wildcats set point as a kill from Mergen sealed the first win.
After Maroon launched an ace in the second frame, the Scarlet Knights called timeout trailing, 12-8. After the break, Maroon served 10 consecutive points, including three more aces that pushed `Nova's lead to 22-8. The Scarlet Knights crept back on a 7-2 run, but two kills from Mergen sealed a 25-16 victory.
The Wildcats got on the board first in the third set and held a 13-8 lead after freshman Krista Andersen connected for back-to-back kills. After a timeout from the Scarlet Knights, VU saw its lead close to just three points, 16-13, but pushed it back to 20-15 after Graman notched a kill. After a miscue from the `Cats, Rutgers closed the lead to just one point, 22-21, but an ace from Maroon and two errors from the Scarlet Knights gave Villanova the match victory in just three sets.
Villanova continues its homestand on Saturday, Oct. 17 and will host Connecticut at 2:00 p.m.
