Final Stats
Philadelphia, Pa. - Villanova (8-4, 2-2 CAA) was defeated by Drexel (5-7, 1-3 CAA) Saturday 9-8 after their comeback fell short. Freshman Kevin Cunningham (Garden City, N.J.) had a breakthrough performance in the loss as he recorded two goals and an assist for the Wildcats.
Villanova gave up three early goals to the Dragons in the first quarter to be down entering the second quarter. The Wildcats received goals from freshman C.J. Small (San Diego, Calif.) and Cunningham but four Drexel scores put Villanova in a 2-7 hole.
An offensive surge from the Wildcats in the third quarter put them back in a position to win the game. Senior Matthew Fritts (Dallas, Tex.) started a streak of five Villanova goals in less than five minutes. Fritts recorded two goals in the contest to bring his season total to 17. Senior Tim Driscoll (Montville, N.J.) also notched two goals for a team leading 23 on the season.
The goals combined with another from senior Dan Liva (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) tied the score at seven entering the fourth quarter but Villanova would fall 8-9 to end the game. Senior goalkeeper Andrew DiLoreto (Wilton, Conn.) tallied six saves in the contest for 98 on the season.
Senior Chris MacDonald (Westfield, N.J.) and Fritts both have scored at least a point in each of Villanova's games this season. MacDonald assisted on two goals in the game for 16 in 2009.
Dragon Colin Ambler led the way for Drexel scoring three goals in the game while goalie Mark Manos recorded 16 saves in the win.
Including Saturday's loss, Villanova has dropped their past three meetings to the Dragons. The Wildcats are back in action next Saturday the 18th when they take on Robert Morris at 1 p.m.
