VILLANOVA, Pa. - An RBI double from senior Meghan Morese in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Villanova the winning run in a 4-3 victory over Georgetown on Tuesday afternoon. The Hoyas tied the game in the top of the seventh, but Morese connected to left centerfield with two outs at the Villanova Softball Field.
The Wildcats (21-20, 5-15) snapped a four-game losing streak and retained a winning overall record.
Morese went 3-for-4 on the day with three RBI, while senior Jackie Dempsey connected on 2-for-4 with four runs. Senior Natalie Hord, freshman Shannon O'Brien and sophomore Christina Botkins each posted one hit.
Freshman Caitlyn Delahaba earned her 14th win of the season as she threw a complete game allowing just five hits and fanning 10 batters.
Junior Danielle Maricle got the first inning going as she reached base on an error and advanced to second on a passed ball. A bunt single from Dempsey moved Maricle to third as a double by Morese scored both runner for a quick 2-0 lead from Villanova.
Georgetown tied the game in the top of the third inning, but the Wildcats responded to reclaim the lead as Dempsey singled up the middle. Hord's RBI single into left field sent Dempsey home for the third run.
The Hoyas got the top of the seventh underway with a lead off double that scored on a single up the middle to tie the game at 3-3.
With two out in the bottom of the seventh Dempsey reached on an error and Morese sent her home for the winning run.
Villanova will be back on the field Friday, April 24 to host its final conference doubleheader of the season. First pitch will begin at 3:00 p.m.
