Defense Shines as Wildcats Defeat Towson

Villanova, Pa. - The Villanova (8-3, 2-1 CAA) defense held their opponent to four goals for the fifth time this season as they defeated Towson (5-6, 3-1 CAA) 13-4 Wednesday. Senior goalkeeper Andrew DiLoreto (Wilton, Conn.) led the top ranked scoring defense in the net recording 10 saves, bringing his season total to 93.

The Tigers came on strong scoring two goals to be on top 2-1 less than two minutes into the second quarter, but they would never lead again. Villanova put together streaks of four and six goals to put the game out of reach for Towson.

Junior Mark Scioscia (East Hampton, N.Y.) led the way for Villanova with two goals and an assist in the contest. Scioscia now has five goals on the season. Senior Tim Langan Jr. (Madison, N.J.) also recorded two goals for Villanova for a total of 10 in 2009.

Villanova also received offensive spark from freshman CJ Small (San Diego, Calif.) and Kevin Cunningham (Garden City, N.J.). Each had a goal in the game giving Small nine and Cunningham two on the season.

Seniors Matthew Fritts (Dallas, Tex.) and Chris MacDonald (Westfield, N.J.) kept their streak alive of scoring at least one point in each Villanova game. Fritts scored twice while MacDonald had a goal and an assist.

Towson was led by Randall Cooper who had a goal and an assist in the contest. Tiger goalkeeper Rob Wheeler notched five saves while allowing 10 goals.

The win is the second in two years for Villanova against the Tigers. Towson had captured the previous 15 victories.

Villanova returns to action this Saturday April 11th when they travel to Drexel for a conference matchup. The contest is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
