CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Senior Amy Gulyas and freshman Krista Andersen posted double-doubles for the second consecutive match as the Villanova volleyball team (10-2) defeated Virginia 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 20-25, 25-16) on Saturday afternoon at the Marriott Cavalier Invitational.
Gulyas tallied 10 kills and 10 digs, while Andersen connected for 15 kills and collected 20 digs.
Sophomore Maggie Mergen notched 15 kills as senior Elysse Studzinksi recorded 12 kills on just one error to hit .478.
Sophomore Kim Maroon collected 25 digs and had a stellar seven service aces in the match. Classmate Courtney Oertli gave out a match-high 51 assists.
Villanova got on the board first in set one as Virginia called timeout trailing 10-6 after a kill from Andersen. Maroon hit back-to-back aces to stay in front 15-8, but the Cavaliers were able to close to within three points, 21-18 and the Wildcats called a timeout. After the break Studzinski found the floor for a kill to send Maroon up to serve for set point. Mergen connected and Villanova took a 25-19 victory.
The Wildcats got on the board first again in the second frame, but Virginia quickly recovered as the teams traded points back and forth with 10 ties before `Nova took a 21-19 lead on consecutive aces from Maroon. Mergen found the floor for two kills as the `Cats served for set point with Gulyas connecting for a 25-21 win.
After the Cavaliers took the third set, Villanova stormed back to a 14-7 lead after Oertli and freshman CeCe Twitty notched a kill a piece. After a timeout from Virginia, Andersen served for three additional points keeping VU in front, 17-7. Mergen recorded an ace to give Villanova a 24-13 lead, but the Cavaliers scored three unanswered points to extend the set before Andersen slammed a final kill for the 3-1 match victory.
The Wildcats conclude the Marriott Cavalier Invitational as they face Virginia Tech at 4:30 p.m.
