Villanova Defeats Seton Hall, 3-1

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Villanova volleyball team earned a hard-fought 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-22) victory over Seton Hall on Sunday afternoon at the Walsh Gymnasium.

Redshirt sophomore Morgan Petkovich led the Wildcats (16-4, 5-1 BIG EAST) with 18 kills and just one error to hit .415. Sophomore Krista Andersen posted 14 kills and junior Maggie Mergen connected on 11.

Freshman Alyssa Anderson posted a double-double giving out a match-high 46 assists and collecting 11 digs.

Junior Kim Maroon tallied a match-high 26 digs and sophomore Kristina Bither recorded 14.

The Wildcats had an excellent blocking match with 12 team blocks and posted a .221 hitting percentage, while holding the Pirates to just a .096 clip.

The Wildcats trailed Seton Hall 13-11 after a kill from Andersen, but had pulled to within one point, 15-14, after a miscue from the Pirates. Villanova called its first timeout trailing 20-17, but quickly used its final one still trailing by three points, 23-20. Petkovich smashed a kill out of the break, but Seton Hall earned set point, 24-21 after a kill and won the first set, 25-22. Andersen tallied six kills in the set, while Petkovich smashed five.

The Pirates got on the board first in the second frame, but Villanova quickly tied the score at two apiece. A Seton Hall error and a kill by Mergen put the `Cats in front, 6-4, but the Pirates scored five unanswered points to take a 9-6 lead. Villanova tied the score at 9-9 after a timeout and an ace from Mergen and took a 13-12 lead after Andersen found the floor for a kill. Mergen and freshman Carly Edwards combined for a block to extend their lead to 15-12 and force Seton Hall to use a timeout. Villanova's lead had pushed to 19-13 after back-to-back errors from the Pirates and after Petkovich connected on a kill the squad held set point, 24-17. The Wildcats won the set, 25-17 after an error from Seton Hall. Villanova combined to hit .216 in the set, while holding the Pirates to a .026 clip. Petkovich posted four kills.

Villanova jumped out to a quick 4-1 advantage following an ace from Bither and had extended the lead to 6-2 forcing the Pirates to use a timeout early. Petkovich found the floor for a kill and Edwards put up a block to extend the `Cats lead to 14-8 and they remained in front, 18-11 as Seton Hall used its final timeout. After a combined block from Edwards and Mergen, Villanova earned set point, 24-15. The Pirates scored three additional points, but Edwards connected on a final kill for a 25-18 victory in the third. Petkovich tallied six kills in the frame, while `Nova hit for a combined .250 clip and blanked the Pirates.

The Wildcats trailed Seton Hall for much of the fourth set until they tied the score at 19 apiece following an error from the Pirates. The teams traded points back-and forth until a kill from Mergen smashed the ball for a kill that gave Villanova its first lead of the match, 22-21, and sent Seton Hall into a timeout. After the break Mergen connected on another kill to give Villanova match point with a 24-22 advantage. A solo block from Petkovich sealed the victory, 25-22.

Villanova will travel to Fordham on Tuesday, Oct. 12 for a 7:00 p.m. start time.
