Complete Thursday Results

COLLEGE PARK, Md.--Sophomore Roxy Tammadge (Durban, South Africa) registered an NCAA "B Cut" qualifying time on the first day of the Terrapin Cup Invitational and Villanova is currently in second place in the eight-team field after races held at the Eppley Natatorium on Thursday morning and evening. Two relays and four individual events were contested today and the Wildcats currently have a team score of 219 points, trailing only host Maryland in the eight-team field.

The highlight of the day belonged to Tammadge in the 500 yard freestyle, which was the first individual event contested. In the morning preliminaries, Tammadge had the fastest time out of 62 swimmers at 4:46.66, nearly six seconds below the NCAA "B" qualifying time for the event. She lowered that mark slightly in the finals and secured a first-place finish with a time of 4:46.23 to outpace the rest of the field by more than four seconds.

Villanova had three swimmers in the top eight of the 500 free and two others in the top 16 to account for a total of 54 points from that event. Sophomore Hayley Edwards (Pilesgrove, N.J.) came in sixth place with a time of 4:56.95, while classmate Leigh Anne Patterson (Cherry Hill, N.J.) was seventh in 4:57.35. The three second-year swimmers for the Wildcats all qualified for the `A' final of the 500 free, while sophomore Summer Cook (Thornton, Colo.) and senior Astrid Armgarth (Linkoping, Sweden) advanced to the `B' final and placed 10th and 15th, respectively.

In the 200 individual medley, Villanova placed two of its entries in the top eight of the finals. Sophomore Erin Malone (Sydney, Australia) came in second from an original field of 60 competitors with a time of 2:03.27 in the `A' final. That mark was just six-tenths off the winning pace, while junior Lindsey Hagens (Westboro, Mass.) came in eighth with a time of 2:07.46. Earlier in the day, Hagens had recorded a mark of 2:04.82 and was fifth after the preliminaries. Junior Elizabeth Clarke (Winnetka, Ill.) tallied a 16th place finish in the 200 IM.

Two other Wildcats recorded individual finishes in the top eight on Thursday, including sophomore Natalie Elphick (Durban, South Africa) in the 50 free. Elphick recorded a season-best time of 23.53 in the preliminaries of the event and then nearly matched it with a time of 23.54 in the finals which was good for fifth place overall. Junior Amanda DiMarco (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) advanced to the finals of the one-meter diving competition and placed sixth with a score of 225.90 points in the finals. She registered 227.05 points in the preliminaries.

In the relays from Thursday's competition, Villanova quartets came in second and fourth, respectively, in the 400 yard medley relay. The runner-up squad posted a time of 3:45.96 while the Wildcats "B" team was not far behind in fourth place with a time of 3:50.82. Junior Yolana Du Plessis (Boksburg, South Africa) led off for the second place relay and was followed by Malone, Stetson and Elphick. The fourth place team featured freshman Mikah Schlesinger (Herzliya, Israel), sophomore Laura McLaughlin (West Chester, Pa.), freshman Chloé Conjares (Oakland, N.J.) and Tammadge.

Villanova also had two squads in the 200 freestyle relay and came in fourth and 13th in the event. Tammadge took the leadoff leg for the fourth place team and was followed by Edwards, Clarke and Elphick as the Wildcats registered a time of 1:35.54.

Entering competition on Friday, the team scores have the Terrapins in first place with 311.5 points with Villanova coming next. The other teams include Connecticut (189), Towson (156.5), Richmond (125.5), William & Mary (112.5), West Chester (88) and Johns Hopkins (36).

The tournament picks up again on Friday with preliminary events at 10 a.m. and finals competition starting at 6 p.m.
