PITTSBURGH, Pa.--Two straight weekends of BIG EAST Championship competition began at Trees Pool on Friday and Saturday, where Villanova had three student-athletes in competition in the diving portion of the conference meet. On the women's side, the Wildcats qualified both of their divers for the BIG EAST competition in sophomore Amanda DiMarco (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) and freshman Amy Zuerndorfer (Concord, Mass.). From the men's team, sophomore J. Paul Suydam (New Brunswick, N.J.) qualified for the conference championships.

In women's diving on Friday night, DiMarco finished 18th in the trials with a score of 213.85. The scores in the middle of the pack were remarkably close and DiMarco was less than 1.5 points away from finishing in the top 16 and advancing to at least the consolation finals. Zuerndorfer scored 176.85 points in the trials to finish 27th.

DiMarco continued competition on Saturday in the 3-meter competition and advanced to the consolation final with a score of 222.90 in the trials. That was good for 14th place out of 29 divers, and she would go on to post a score of 252.45 in the consolation to finish 15th overall and earn two team points for Villanova.

Earlier on Saturday in the men's first competition, Suydam posted a score of 154.30 on the 1-meter board to finish 22nd in the trials.

This weekend's competition wrapped up a strong season for the Wildcat divers. DiMarco won nine events during the season, including five first-place finishes on the 1-meter board and four wins in 3-meter diving. She and Zuerndorfer both produced season-best scores in 1-meter competition against Providence in the final dual meet of the season on January 22 and the team's last competition before the BIG EAST meet.

Suydam also finished the year strong, posting his first win of the season and a BIG EAST qualifying mark on the 1-meter board at Seton Hall on January 19. He followed that up with another solid performance against Providence in the final dual meet.

Pittsburgh is the host for the 2010 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships. The diving events are being held from February 12-14, while the swimming events follow from February 17-20.
