Cross Country, Football Recieve State Resolutions

March 11, 2010

HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Villanova football and women's cross country teams were recently honored by the State of Pennsylvania by receiving Resolutions congratulating both teams for their respective national championships this past fall.

Sponsored by State House Representative Santoni, a Villanova alum and former baseball player for the Wildcats, the documents were presented before the State House.

With all five Villanova scorers crossing the finish line earning All-American status, the Villanova women's cross country squad dominated the NCAA Championships and claimed the 2009 NCAA title at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind. The Wildcats cruised to victory earning 86 team points and claiming their 8th national title.

Junior wide receiver Matt Szczur (Erma, N.J.) rushed for a career-high 159 yards and carried No. 2 seed Villanova (14-1) to its first national championship in football on December 18th, 2009. The Wildcats knocked off No. 1 seed and undefeated Montana (14-1) to win a national title as head coach Andy Talley reached the pinnacle of college football in his 25th season on the Main Line.
