POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - In the second day of MAAC Conference competition, the Villanova water polo team dropped both matches of the day to St. Francis (NY) and Iona, falling 9-4 and 14-8, respectively. Sophomore Jen Soares (Foster City, Calif.) led the Wildcats with three goals for the day.
Against St. Francis, Villanova got off to a two goal start in the first quarter with scores coming from Soares and junior Kathleen Maloney (Chicago, Ill.), but it wasn't enough to hold off the St. Francis offensive, which scored their nine points in the first three quarters of play. The Terriers were led by Andrew Dolnay who led both teams with four goals, while VU saw goals also coming from a pair of freshmen in Julia Penkal (Harleysville, Pa.) and Lauren Peachey (Harleysville, Pa.).
Against Iona, the Gaels posted a seven-goal third quarter performance to propel themselves over the Wildcats, 14-8. For `Nova, sophomore Sara Kane (Sacramento, Calif.), Soares, Penkal, Maloney and junior Maria Apablasa (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) all netted points for the Wildcats, while Iona was paced by Mackenzie Mone's five goals and Maggie Wood's four tallies. Three other Gaels contributed with scores for the day.
Villanova will be back in action next weekend when they face Marist, St. Francis (NY), Siena and Iona once again for conference games in Brooklyn Heights and Staten Island, N.Y.
