VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova softball team (21-27) continued its winning ways on Thursday afternoon defeating Drexel, 5-4 in nonconference action.
The Wildcats used a full roster en route to the victory and sophomore Caitlyn Delahaba picked up her 10th victory this season giving up just one earned run while striking out seven batters.
Sophomores Molly Manning and Kristi Burlin each went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in two runs, while Burlin also scored one run- a long homerun to left centerfield.
Senior Danielle Maricle and sophomores Shannon O'Brien and Tessa Braga added one hit apiece.
Drexel scored first putting a quick run on the board after the leadoff batter was hit by a pitch and then sent home on a double, and jumped ahead 2-0 in the top of the second.
Burlin's homerun got the Wildcats on the board in the bottom of the second and tied the game at 2-2 after Maricle led off with a single was sent home by Manning.
O'Brien led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a triple to centerfield and junior Christina Botkins followed with a walk. Sophomore Tessa Braga re-entered the game to run and stole second, while Maricle followed with a sacrifice fly that scored O'Brien. A single from Manning scored senior Jess O'Boyle who reached base on a walk and pinch runner junior Stephanie Zrebiec put Villanova in front, 5-2, when Burlin used an RBI single to drive her home.
The Dragons threatened with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but a pop up foul ball ended the game and gave Villanova the win.
The Wildcats will conclude the home portion of their schedule beginning a three-game series with Connecticut on Saturday. A doubleheader is slated for 12:00 p.m.
