STORRS, Conn. - The Villanova volleyball team (13-3, 2-0 BIG EAST) has extended its win-streak to 12 matches after sweeping Connecticut 3-0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-21) on the road Sunday afternoon.
Redshirt sophomore Morgan Petkovich led the Wildcats with 10 kills, while junior Maggie Mergen posted nine kills and recorded seven blocks.
As a squad, the `Cats combined for a season-high 13 blocks.
Junior Kim Maroon collected a season-best 29 digs and freshman Alyssa Anderson gave out 25 assists.
"Two road victories is a great way to start conference play," head coach Josh Steinbach said. "The team really played hard on the road this weekend and had a good energy. Kim (Maroon) was excellent in both matches and it was great to put together great blocking matches back-to-back. We've been able to make good plays in close games this season and that is a great trait to have at this point in the season."
Villanova dominated the opening set with a quick 13-7 lead that forced the Huskies into a timeout. Following the break, Petkovich served for six points as the Wildcats went on a 7-1 run and extended their lead to 21-8. Consecutive miscues from UConn gave `Nova a 25-11 victory.
In the second frame, UConn got on the board first, but the Wildcats quickly took a lead and extended to 14-10. After a timeout from the Huskies they were able to close the gap to two points as Villanova called a timeout holding a 16-14 lead. There were five ties following the break and UConn took a 20-19 lead, but six consecutive errors from UConn and a kill from Petkovich gave the `Cats set point at 24-22 and they won the set on another Husky error.
`Nova was on the board first in the third set, but the score was tied six times before UConn took a lead at 12-11. Anderson connected on a kill to tie the score at 19 apiece and a kill and an ace from sophomore CeCe Twitty kept the score tied at 21-21. The Huskies would not score another point as sophomore Krista Andersen found the floor on a kill and an ace from Twitty sealed the set victory and a match sweep.
The Wildcats return home next weekend to continue BIG EAST play as they welcome Marquette to Jake Nevin Fieldhouse on Friday, Oct. 1 at 7:00 p.m. and Syracuse on Sunday, Oct. 3.
