DES MOINES, Iowa--In the semifinals of the 1500 meters senior Sheila Reid (Newmarket, Ont.) finished fourth in her heat at Drake Stadium on Thursday evening and automatically qualified for the national championship race which is slated for Saturday afternoon. Reid and junior Shericka Ward (Leesburg, Fla.) were both in action at the NCAA Championships on Thursday evening. Ward came in fifth in her semifinal heat of the 100 meter hurdles and did not advance to the finals.

In the second of two semifinal heats in the 1500 meters Reid crossed the finish line in 4:16.69, placing both fourth in her heat and fourth overall. She ran at a steady and relaxed pace and was never out of contention for one of the top five spots in her heat. The top five finishers in each heat plus the next two fastest times automatically moved on to the finals.

Reid began her race at the back of the pack and remained there with 800 meters left in the race, although to that point there has been no significant separation in the pack. Reid started to make her move with 700 meters remaining and over the next 200 meters moved up to the front of the pack.

As the bell sounded for the final lap of the race Reid had surged into third place with Morgane Gay of Virginia and Jordan Hasay of Oregon just ahead of her, and Becca Friday of Oregon just behind. The other three runners secured spots at the front of the pack with 250 meters to go and as the group came around the final turn Reid had clearly established a spot for herself in the top five of the race.

Between now and the finals of the 1500 meters on Saturday afternoon Reid will be running for the 5000 meters championship on Friday night. She and Hasay are the only finals qualifiers from the 1500 meters who are also running in the 5000 meters tomorrow.

In the semifinals of the 100 meter hurdles Ward crossed finished with a time of 13.24 and was fifth in her heat, with only the top two finishers from her heat advancing to the championship race. Ward turned in her third-fastest time of the season at 13.24 and made her second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships in the 100 meter hurdles.

The remaining schedule for the Wildcats has Reid and junior Bogdana Mimic (Pancevo, Serbia) running in the 5000 meters on Friday at 9:10 p.m. Eastern time, while the finals in the 1500 meters is set for 1:18 p.m. Eastern time on Saturday afternoon.
