ORONO, Maine--Led by an offense which surpassed 40 points for the fourth straight game, No. 6 Villanova (4-1, 2-0 CAA Football) rolled to a 41-20 victory over Maine (2-3, 1-1 CAA) at Alfond Stadium on Saturday afternoon. In the Wildcats first foray on the road in conference play this season, the same things which had led the team to success in its three previous games were once again on display.
Junior quarterback John Robertson (Paramus, N.J.) threw four touchdown passes for the third straight week and the Villanova defense continued to perform at a high level as the Wildcats extended their winning streak to four straight games. Villanova recorded six sacks for the day and limited the Black Bears to just 276 yards of offense. Maine was also 2-of-15 in third-down conversions and the Wildcats held the ball for more than 17 minutes in the second half to prevent any thoughts of a Black Bears rally.
Robertson went 16-of-25 for 285 yards with four touchdowns and his first interception of the season. His four touchdown passes match a career high and he has now reached that mark four times in his career. He connected with nine different receivers in the game and spread out the touchdowns to four different players. The turning point in the game was a 25-yard pass for a score to freshman wide receiver Lincoln Collins (Nahant, Mass.) with 37 seconds left in the second quarter.
That touchdown sent Villanova into halftime with a 21-13 lead and a pair of scores by the Wildcats just over a minute apart in the third quarter put the game out of reach. Senior tight end Earnest Pettway (Long Beach, Calif.) scored on a 10-yard reception with 10:10 to play in the third period and junior wide receiver Kevin Gulyas (Allentown, Pa.) caught a 43-yard pass for a touchdown with 8:53 left in the quarter.
Junior linebacker Don Cherry (Trumbull, Conn.) led the Wildcats defensive effort with three of the team's sacks and a total of 4.5 tackles for loss. He has now had three sacks in a game on two different occasions this season and is one of just two Villanova players since 2003 to have three sacks in a game even once. Cherry also had a game-high 12 tackles and reached double figures for the second time this season.
Maine took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter when Arthur Williams caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Dan Collins but that turned out to be the Black Bears only lead of the day. Senior running back Kevin Monangai (Roseland, N.J.) scored on a one-yard run later in the period and the Wildcats went ahead 14-7 on a 23-yard touchdown reception by senior slot receiver Poppy Livers (Seaside, Calif.) in the opening minute of the second period.
Both teams came up empty on two straight possessions after Villanova took the lead. Maine eventually pulled to within 14-13 on Collins' two-yard pass for a touchdown to Jordan Dunn with 3:19 left before the intermission. Black Bears kicker Sean Decloux attempted to rush for a two-point conversion but fumbled on the play and the Wildcats maintained a one-point margin.
Livers had a team-high 87 receiving yards on just three catches, while Gulyas finished with 63 yards and Pettway had 41 yards. Junior running back Gary Underwood (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the Villanova ground game with 70 yards on eight carries, including an 18-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter which closed the scoring.
The majority of Maine's offense came through the air, as Collins was 20-of-35 for 210 yards and three touchdowns. He also gained 58 yards on the ground but had only 15 net rushing yards due to the Wildcats sacks. Damarr Aultman caught nine passes for 88 yards and Arthur Williams finished with 87 yards and two touchdowns on four catches.
Villanova returns home next week and will host Rhode Island at 1 p.m. at Villanova Stadium.
NOTES: Villanova came into the game versus Maine leading the nation in average time of possession per game (34:37) ...
