Wildcats Lend Helping Hand to Day of Service

Oct. 8, 2014 Villanova, Pa. -

St. Thomas of Villanova was known for his great charity to the poor and marginalized; a great sentiment that many young Wildcats took to heart as they celebrated the university's patron saint and his legacy with a day of service and volunteering around the city of Philadelphia.

19 different teams including over 5,000 alumni, students and faculty joined together on September 27, 2014 to give back to Greater Philadelphia on the St. Thomas of Villanova Day of Service.

"This year, we were able to coordinate 19 teams to participate in some way, shape or form as a part of the annual St. Thomas of Villanova Day of Service," said Student Services Coordinator Allison Venella. "Some of our teams were able to go out and serve at sites in the surrounding region all day; others helped to do prep-work for the event, by organizing supplies and making sandwiches and bagged lunches for the 4,800  volunteers. The Day of Service is a celebration of everything Villanova stands-for, including a commitment to igniting change within the community around us. The opportunity for Villanova student-athletes to share their time and talents with others in our community is so important. We value the experience of being able to volunteer as teams while recognizing that we are all a part of the greater Villanova University community of 4,800 volunteers making a difference at many different service sites in our area as a part of the Day of Service."

This ninth annual event builds upon the great service performed throughout the year by the Villanova community and exists as a unique way to put its Augustinian ideals into action.
