Villanova, Pa. -October is a month full of thrills and Villanova (10-12, 3-4 BIG EAST) gave Creighton (13-7, 6-1 BIG EAST) a scare on Saturday night as the Wildcats forced the Bluejays into four close sets with scores of 25-17, 20-25, 25-15 and 25-23. While the Wildcats were unable to overcome an aggressive Creighton offense, they did post positive numbers with 44 kills, 44 assists, six service aces, 66 digs and 10 total blocks.
Junior Lauren Carpenter fell just short of her fourth double-double of the season against the Bluejays as she led the Wildcat offense with 13 kills, 9 digs and three blocks. Carpenter is quickly approaching her 1000 kill as a Wildcat with less than 200 to go, a feat that could be overcome by the end of the season.
Sophomore Claire Crutchfield logged a season high eight kills against the Bluejays with powerful hitting from the right side allowing the Wildcats to quickly gather momentum against a Creighton defense that was prone to errors and could not overcome a near perfect Wildcat team in the second set.
The second set saw a stellar performance from the Wildcats who only posted only three attack errors, three service errors and posted an impressive .364 attack percentage. The Wildcats only allowed the Bluejays to bring the match even twice as they held a demanding lead over the preseason BIG EAST favorites for the entirety of the set.
Defensively, a well-rounded Villanova group as junior libero Michelle Adams dug deep 23 times for the Wildcats and senior Allie DiBernardo posted 14 digs and 20 assists.
Colleen Hickey posted a season high three service aces against the Bluejays along with her six kills for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats will be back in action Oct. 17 as the Wildcats travel to Milwaukee, Wis. to take on Marquette at 8 p.m. ET on Friday night.
