30th Anniversary Celebration of National Title Highlights Wildcats Exhibition Opener

Nov. 4, 2014 VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova is set to open the exhibition portion of its 2014-15 season against Northwood on Tuesday night at the Pavilion.

But that is only a portion of the storyline Tuesday night. This contest marks the return to the Pavilion sidelines of Villanova head coach Rollie Massimino as he brings NAIA power Northwood to campus for the first time. This will mark Massimino's first appearance on the Pavilion sideline since he coached Villanova on March 17, 1992 in an National Invitation Tournament contest here.

On hand to watch will be the bulk of a roster that made history on April 1, 1985, when Villanova upended No. 1 Georgetown 66-64 in an epic upset known to this day as the "perfect game". Villanova will honor the 30th anniversary with a special pre-game ceremony that gets underway at 6:35.

The game will air nationally on Fox Sports 1 with Tim Brando and Bill Raftery on the call. You can also listen to the Villanova broadcast on CBS Sports Radio 610 (Ryan Fannon and Whitey Rigsby). The telecast will offer a number of special features. Including special audio elements that include both head coaches wearing a microphone.

"It is going to be a great night," stated Villanova head coach Jay Wright, whose Wildcats finished 29-5 in 2013-14. "We've got pretty much the whole '85 team back, cheerleaders from that year are back, all the coaches and even some coaches who weren't on the staff that year: George Raveling, Tom Brennan, Mike Fratello, Pete Gillen. We've got former players back. It's just going to be a great night."

On Selection Sunday 1985, Villanova was not even a certainty to be included in the first-ever field of 64. The Wildcats were 19-10 and had suffered a blowout loss at Pittsburgh in the final regular season contest of the year, a game broadcast nationally by CBS. Yet the `Cats, who had reached the Elite Eight in both 1982 and '83, were invited as the No. 8 seed with an opening round assignment at Dayton.

The Wildcats then went on a run that is fondly recalled on the Main Line, upending powerhouse programs from Michigan, Maryland, and North Carolina en route to the program's first Final Four appearance since 1971. That brought them to Lexington, Ky., one of three BIG EAST teams in the event.

"That really was the year the BIG EAST took the nation by storm," noted Wright, who was then an assistant coach at the University of Rochester and would join Massimino's Villanova staff in 1987.

The Wildcats knocked off Memphis State in the opening game of the Final Four and then authored an upset over the Hoyas that continues to live on three decades after it took place.

Now, the group is back as part of a celebration of Villanova Basketball. A private dinner was held on Monday night and the '85 champions will take part in an interactive fan experience in the Pavilion at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
