Villanova/Sam Houston State Post-Game Notes

Dec. 13, 2014

Recap | Box Score | Quotes

  • Sam Houston State advances to the semifinals of the Division I Football Championship and will face #2 seed North Dakota State next weekend. This is the third semifinal appearance in the past four years for the Bearkats, who are now 11-4 overall this season. Sam Houston State defeated Montana in the semifinals in 2011 and Eastern Washington in 2012 to advance to the national championship game in Frisco, Texas.
  • Sam Houston State quarterback Jared Johnson surpassed 300 passing yards for the third time this season. He finished the game with 303 yards on 22-of-27 passing, including three touchdown passes. The 303 yards stand as Johnson's second highest career total, trailing only the 386 yards he had in a win over Alabama State earlier this season. The 22-of-27 passing performance for Johnson is a career best.
  • Bearkats wide receiver LaDarius Brown had a game-high 174 receiving yards on six catches, including a pair of touchdowns. The 174 yards marked his second 100-yard game of the season and were a season-high total.
  • Sam Houston State linebacker P.J. Hall had two tackles for loss in the game and now has 29 tackles for loss this season. That total is two short of Andre Finley's single-season school record of 31 tackles for loss.
  • Bearkats head coach K.C. Keeler improves to 5-7 in his career in head-to-head meetings against Villanova and head coach Andy Talley. Keeler is in his first season at Sam Houston State but previously spent 11 years at Delaware (2002-12), which is when he coached against the Wildcats. Today's meeting was the first ever between Villanova and the Bearkats.
  • The two teams combined for 968 yards of total offense. Villanova ran 68 plays for 514 yards (7.6 yards per play) and the Bearkats ran 73 plays for 454 yards (6.2 yards per play). Neither team committed a turnover in the game.
  • Villanova finishes the season with an 11-4 overall record. This is the fifth time in the last seven years that the Wildcats reached the FCS playoffs, and the fourth time in that span that Villanova has advanced at least to the quarterfinals. Overall, the Wildcats have a record of 60-30 (.667) over the past seven seasons (2008-14).
  • Villanova is now 11-10 (.524) all-time in the Division I Football Championship, including 3-3 in the quarterfinal round. Despite the loss, the Wildcats are 8-2 at home all-time in the FCS playoffs. Both home losses came in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs.
  • In his first start since the 2012 season opener against Temple, senior quarterback Chris Polony had a career-high 315 yards of total offense. It is the first time that he has surpassed 300 yards in a game, as his previous career high was 232 total yards against Maine on October 29, 2011. Polony was 13-of-24 through the air for 228 yards and a touchdown in today's game, while also running 13 times for 87 yards and two scores. He also set career highs for passing yards, rushing yards, long rush and rushing touchdowns in a game.
  • Senior running back Kevin Monangai had a game-high 166 yards rushing on 27 carries. This is the fifth time this season and the 13th time in his career that Monangai rushed for over 100 yards in a game. His total of 166 yards is the third-highest of his career and his second-best effort this season (he had 170 yards in the win over Morgan State earlier in the year). Monangai finished the season with three 100-yard rushing efforts in his final four games. He ends his career third in school history in career rushing with 3,167 yards.
  • Senior wide receiver Poppy Livers had four receptions for 96 yards and a touchdown in the game. In the final game of his collegiate career, Livers moved into 12th place in school history with 1,792 career receiving yards. His 141 career receptions are the 10th most in school history. Livers finished this season with 67 receptions (tied for ninth in a single-season in school history) for 987 yards (sixth most in a single-season in school history).
  • Junior linebacker Don Cherry tied a career high with 16 tackles in the game (nine solo, seven assisted). He matched his effort from the win over William & Mary earlier this season and finishes the year with seven double-digit tackle games. Cherry had 134 tackles in 14 games on the year, which is the fifth-highest single-season total since Villanova restored its football program in 1985.
